DIGITAL SHORTS BACKGROUND AND FILM INFORMATION 29th January 2009
Northern Ireland Screen and The UK Film Council's New Cinema Fund's Digital Shorts scheme is a year long programme which aims to seek out and develop new filmmaking talent and enable them to make innovative short films using digital technology. In 2008/09 four films will be commissioned with budgets of up to £10,000.2009 marks the fifth year of Digital Shorts production in Northern Ireland. Previous Digital Shorts have been screened both locally and internationally at film festivals. Examples of previous successes include: MESSAGES FOR MARIA, written and directed by Chris Baugh and produced by Brendan Mullin was screened as part of the UK Film Council's Digital Generation event at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. THE MORNING NEWS, written and directed by Louis McCullagh and produced by Chris Martin was featured in the competitive programme at the Los Angeles International Short Film festival and also screened in competition at the Corona Cork Film Festival in 2007.MISSING LINK, written and directed by Cecilia McAllister and produced by Bronagh McCartan has also achieved notable success on the festival circuit screening in competition at the Galway and Cork film festivals. OUT OF TUNE written and directed by Franziska-Maria Apprich was the first Digital Short Plus to be commissioned in Northern Ireland. It was produced by Gawain Morrison of Seamless Productions in 2007. In 2008 four films were produced by Villi Ragnarsson for the Programme. CHAINS is written and directed by Alanna Riddell, HAPPY AS LARRY is written by Dave Kinghan and directed by Brian Philip Davis, LONELY HEARTS INTERRUPTED is written and directed by Tanya Andrews and RIP AND THE PREACHER is written by Mark Jordan and directed by Michael Lennox.
